A mother and foal rescued in Spruitview are now receiving care and comfort at the Germiston SPCA and could use your help to take care of them.
Germiston, South Africa (27 August 2025)- A mother and foal rescued in Spruitview are now receiving care and comfort at the Germiston SPCA.
For two days last week, residents of Spruitview near the N3 spotted an unusual sight. A pair of donkeys were wandering freely through the area. Their adventure even included a moonlit stroll that kept rescuers searching late into the night.
By morning, the animals (a mother and her foal) were finally found and brought to safety at the SPCA. On closer inspection, it was clear that the mother had suffered neglect. She had an injured leg and a raw wound around her neck, likely from being tied with rope.
Dr Sharon from Germiston Veterinary Hospital stepped in immediately to provide treatment, including antibiotics, pain relief, and wound care. State Veterinarians have since scheduled weekly follow-ups to monitor her recovery.
Now settled at the SPCA, the donkeys are safe, healing, and enjoying proper food and care. Known for their gentle nature, the pair have already won hearts among staff and visitors.
They’re also keeping everyone on their toes at mealtimes. Fun Fact about donkeys is that they can eat up to 2% of their body weight every day, which means this mother and foal are working up quite an appetite. Between their feed and the veterinary treatment they need, the costs of care are steadily adding up.
The SPCA has encouraged those who wish to support the donkeys’ recovery to make donations towards their ongoing care.
