A young girl’s journey with a dysplastic kidney has unfolded as a beautiful reminder that even in the face of daunting challenges, miracles truly do happen, often through those we love and cherish.

Cape Town, South Africa (02 July 2025) – Miracles happen every day. And sometimes, they reveal themselves through the selfless acts of those closest to us, our loved ones.

This profound goodness lies at the heart of Cameron’s journey with a dysplastic kidney. Dysplastic kidneys (also known as kidney dysplasia) are kidneys that did not develop properly during the fetal stage, preventing them from working normally.

In 2023 she received the life-altering diagnosis which saw the young girl undergo dialysis for almost a year for almost a year at the Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital.

It was also there that she received support from the Children’s Hospital Trust, which funds projects that change children’s lives (and the lives of the people who love them).

The most heartwarming turn in her journey came recently during tissue typing, when it was discovered that Cameron’s own mother was a perfect match! On 21 May this year, she received the best gift: her mom’s kidney.

In a video shared by the Trust, the brave girl is seen well, healed and thriving with mom’s precious gift inside her. Cameron’s father also expressed how wonderful it is to know his daughter is well and that he’ll be able to tuck her into bed every night for years to come.

Her story not only highlights the critical importance of organisations like the Children’s Hospital Trust in facilitating critical medical procedures, but also profoundly showcases the extraordinary selflessness of a mother’s love.
