South African winters can be harsh, especially if you live outside; Meira’s old kennel leaked every time it rained but thanks to a donation, she has a new one to call her own.

South Africa (06 June 2023) – The Peoples Dispensary for Sick Animals South Africa (PDSA – SA) shared heartwarming photos of Meira, a senior dog who is much-loved by her family, receiving her brand new kennel. We loved how she watched as her blanket was carefully arranged into her new home.

For many South Africans, purchasing a kennel is a cost all too great for them. So they make little homes for their beloved pets out of scraps of wood. Meira’s owner worked hard to make her kennel but as the years passed, it began to deteriorate. When it rained, she would sleep with drips of water. Her owner tried waterproofing it with black plastic and it lasted a little longer. After seeing the loved old girl, PDSA connected with African Tails to get Meira a new kennel and blankets, just in time for winter.

Sadly, many informal homes do not have enough space inside for dogs to sleep. Some homes are merely one room and house several generations. In these cases, much like with Meira’s, a warm and waterproofed kennel is the space these much-loved dogs find their shelter. These families are doing their very best to provide for their pets.

Please note: Meira is not chained, she was being led on a leash to her new kennel.

“Meira finally has a decent space to call her own, unlike her old kennel that leaked when it rained. We’ve added some blankets too, thank you African Tails for the kind donation of fleecy blankets.

Thank you to the special human who donated this kennel, we truly appreciate it.” – PDSA-SA

PDSA-SA works to support communities in South Africa. They are based in Cape Town, George and Soweto. The organisation offers clinical support to animals in need, giving families without means, the chance to get proper care for their animals.

African Tails works to rescue, rehome and care for animals in need in South Africa. they run mass sterilisation drives and offer support to fellow animal welfare organisations.

Both organisations aim to help animals whenever the need arises. Seeing Meira inspect her new home and blankets warmed us all on this chilly Tuesday morning!

If you have spare blankets or a usable kennel that you don’t need, reach out to your local animal welfare organisation, they will happily accept the donation and pass it along to another dog in need.
