Heurada has officially started at the Waterfront Theatre School thanks to the Overberg community helping to fund her dream of being a dancer and theatre student.
Cape Town, South Africa (30 January 2024) – In October 2023, we got to share the inspiring story of Heurada, who found a passion for performing through community theatre, taught herself to dance and landed a spot at a prestigious theatre school; her community were so proud, they started raising funds so she could attend the school in 2024.
Heurada has since started at the Waterfront Theatre School (WTS) and is loving it! Lindsay Moncrieff from Over-Ed reached out to share the happy update.
Lindsay explains that she met Heurada in 2017 when she was in her final year of primary school. The Napier Amateur Dramatic Society (NADS) was putting on its annual Pantomime and Heurada had signed up to join. At the time, she had never been in a show before but she had raw talent shining through. Since then, Heurada has loved the theatre, dance and putting on shows.
The Napier Amateur Dramatic Society (NADS) brings underprivileged children from Napier, Overberg together, to celebrate the arts and expand their talents. NADS aims to create and develop local youth talent by giving them the opportunity to perform on stage.
Heurada took the stage with great enthusiasm and before long, she was helping put on the Pantomimes, choreographing and teaching the children.
Through community involvement, they have been able to fund the first 6 months of Heurada’s studies. Over-Ed is helping raise the funds needed for Heurada to attend the prestigious theatre school for the entire year. They are registered as an NPO and are able to provide a tax certificate for any donations sent in. Should you wish to help Heurada, you can reach out to Lindsay via email here.
Since Heurada’s story was shared Lindsay has been working to instil the love of dance and theatre in the next generation in the Overberg.
“The best part of this all for me is that this has started something
We have a young girl called Alison who is a very talented dancer. She has told her mother that she wants to go to WTS after matric. She is now in grade 10.
So I enrolled her at a local dance school as I figure she may as well start now.”
Over-Ed is helping fund her classes so she can learn as much as possible before following in Heurada’s dance steps.
And once a week, Lindsay hosts a dance class for grades Rs to 2s. They get to pick out costumes and tutus and play with movement and music. What started as helping one dancer find her dream, is turning into a movement in the Overberg, where hopeful dancers will be able to see their dreams become reality.
You can check out the Over-Ed Facebook page here to see all the educational (and theatrical) work being done in the Overberg.
