Photo Goes Viral of Restaurant Manager Crying During the President's National Address!
Photo Cred: Kaylee Bush

A photo is going viral of a restaurant manager, deeply upset, during the President’s National Address last night.

Western Cape, South Africa (28 June 2021) – A photo of a manager of a restaurant who was deeply upset and almost close to tears – after hearing the news of the new level 4 lockdown – is going viral… not because of the sadness but rather because it serves as a reminder that everyone in the hospitality industry desperately needs our help right now!

We spoke to Celeste Perry, the owner of Fat Cactus in Gardens, who said the photo was taken by Kaylee Bush – a waitron in the restaurant. The pic was snapped at exactly 8:20 pm after the President announced that restaurants would be closing again.

This was part of the country’s move to an Adjusted Alert Level 4 for two weeks due to the worrying increase in the numbers of COVID-19 infections in South Africa.

“Kaylee took this photo of the manager at Fat Cactus, after hearing the lockdown news last night. See the time on the clock.”

“Restaurants have fridges full of food with no warning of closing. The heartbreak of them letting their staff go, knowing full well there is no support and they have families to feed, is devastating! Many restaurants won’t survive this. Some have closed for the 2 weeks and others trying to make every cent they can.”

The photo was shared with some tips on how we can all help.

Please show your support by:

  • Ordering takeaways from your favourite sit down restaurant,
  • Buying vouchers to use at a later stage, even as gifts for birthdays etc
  • Asking the owner for the cell number of your favourite waitron and ewalleting them
  • Watching the musicians live streaming and donating what you can.

Money is tight for many people right now, but if you are in a position to do so, every little bit helps.

“The money you might have spent on your weekly tipple can now be paid forward to make a difference and help those who are crushed through no fault of their own. Please stay safe.”

The photo is so incredibly powerful but is also a reminder that we need to look after our local favourites that we love.
