A group of artsy citizens decided to give a ‘hoot’ by transforming a neglected section of a mould-ridden bridge into a colourful mural.

Pietermaritzburg, South Africa (13 January 2026)Street art brings character and charm. It’s colour where there was grey, new life where things felt neglected or forgotten.

Last week in Pietermaritzburg, a small group of locals grabbed their paintbrushes and took on a tired bridge in Blackridge, bringing to life a colourful night sky mural of stars, moons, and watchful owls!

Special things happen when people come together for the betterment of their community.

“This bridge, once covered in black mold, was given a face-lift. It is wonderful to see citizens RISING to reclaim our beloved city,” shared the Keep PMB Clean Action Group (KPCA).

The KPCA is a local organisation empowering citizens to be the positive change they wish to see in the city. They shared the news of the Blackbridge’s new and improved look, extending their gratitude towards the community who made it happen.

“Well done to Glenn whose team prepared the bridge for the night sky mural, and well done to super stars Etta, Louise, Catrien, Rose, Heidi and Major for teaming up to create something beautiful together,” the group shared.

Community members have already acknowledged the joy this small but impactful project has brought.

“I saw the ladies there bright and early on Saturday morning. Not even the rain stopped them. Well done. It looks great!” shared Johan Barnard.

“Well done guys, it really makes a difference, thank you,” shared Melville Riggien.

In 2026, perhaps it’s an important reminder that you don’t need to look far in the quest to create meaningful change. It starts with an intention to spread good in the spaces you already occupy. It could even begin with something as small as a paintbrush.
