potholes

Tommie de Beer was travelling down a road when he spotted three guys working on the roadside, filling potholes in Potchefstroom. He shared the moment on Facebook and the men are being thanked for their efforts.

Two years ago, Tommie first came across Dirkie Venter and his team filling potholes in Potchefstroom. He shared the story on the Potchefstroom Facebook Group and more recently, confirmed that the guys are still upholding their civic virtues.

According to Tommie, Dirkie and his team go and collect any leftover tar from their local government facility and then using very basic tools, use the tar to fill all the new potholes.

“Then they warm up in their primitive yet effective way and fill the hole. I really take my hat off for him and his helpers.” – Tommie de Beer

This is being done on a daily basis, usually before a full workday, even in the blistering cold. The costs of this project are being absorbed by Dirkie.

“Great respect for the people… and still he does it in his own time before work in cold winters mornings… and he takes most of the expenses himself”

The residents of Potch have been so grateful for the men and their kind deeds. The men have been praised for all their efforts.

“Wat n inspirasie vir ons almal. Dankie vir dit wat ons by hom kan leer. Een mens kan n verskil aan die samelewing maak.” (What an inspiration for all of us. Thank you for what we can learn from him. A person can make a difference to society.) – Marita Ferreira

“I’d like to suggest that the town offer him and his team some payback: let’s donate what we can from our businesses, our homes, or our hearts. They could end up with plants, haircuts, groceries, a car service, a car wash, a massage… come on everyone, give what you can. Tommie De Beer would you be able to coordinate it? I’ll start by giving them a Pick and Pay voucher.” – Karin Panaino Petersen
