Through TAWI’s outreach, one woman’s commitment to her puppy’s health has become a symbol of how kindness and knowledge can transform entire communities.

Eastern Cape, South Africa (24 October 2025) – Every day, the team from TAWI (Transkei Animal Welfare Initiative) moves through rural communities around Port St Johns, knowing that they won’t reach every animal in need. There is always another family, another dog, and another story waiting to unfold. There’s no finish line in this work.

Their mission is rooted in compassion and empowerment. The organisation provides primary animal healthcare services in communities where veterinary support is almost non-existent for hundreds of kilometres. In these areas, many free-roaming animals face challenges like overbreeding, malnutrition, parasites, and disease. By working directly with people, TAWI promotes humane education and supports pet owners so they can care for their animals at home.

And often, the impact of this work can be seen in the smallest gestures.

Not long ago, a Gogo arrived at one of TAWI’s mobile clinics with her puppy for its vaccination. Her name is not mentioned, but clearly a member of the community who is making a difference. On the surface, it seemed like an ordinary visit, many pet owners bring their animals for vaccines. But this moment stood out. Along with her puppy, she carried a small notebook. Inside, she recorded the date of the vaccination and carefully noted when the next one was due. It may seem like a small act, but it reflected a deeper understanding.

She had not only learned the importance of vaccinations but also that her puppy would need follow-ups to stay healthy. Her willingness to keep track showed a sense of responsibility and care that goes beyond the individual animal. She is now empowered with knowledge that will likely be passed on to neighbours and members of the community.

The simple act of a woman carrying that notebook embodies what TAWI strives for, a growing culture of empathy and awareness that transforms communities, a pet owner at a time.
