The courage of two friends and the swift response of multiple rescue teams helped prevent tragedy when a man fell into the sea at Green Point Lighthouse.

Cape Town, South Africa (08 September 2025) – It was a dramatic evening at Green Point Promenade on Saturday, 6 September.

“At 17h46, NSRI Table Bay, NSRI Bakoven and the City of Cape Town water rescue network were activated following eyewitness reports of a man fallen off the Promenade at Green Point Lighthouse, and in the water injured,” said Ewald Bonzet, NSRI Table Bay coxswain.

The man, a 27-year-old from Durban, had been spending time on the Promenade with friends when he slipped over the edge and into the sea, sustaining serious injuries. Immediate action came from two adult male friends who bravely climbed down a ladder to reach him. They pulled him onto rocks, keeping him from drowning, and then moved him to a ledge below the wall, protecting him from the force of incoming waves.

As emergency services arrived, NSRI rescue swimmers, a Metro rescue technician, and an ER24 paramedic met the two friends and began medical treatment on the injured man. The two friends, commended for their life-saving actions, emerged without a single scratch.

The rescue continued with a technical high-angle rope extrication. Secured in a Stokes basket stretcher, the man was carefully lifted back onto the Promenade and transported to the hospital by ambulance. He remains in serious but stable condition under medical care.

Bonzet added praise for the community’s quick response, noting the vital role eyewitnesses played in raising the alarm. Thanks to a combination of courage, coordination, and expertise, what could have been a tragedy instead became a testament to bravery and teamwork in the face of danger.
