After tuning into a radio interview, one listener was inspired to do something awesome for babies in need in the Free State; knitting an entirely new future for the community.
Free State, South Africa (03 May, 2023)— The Free State isn’t known for kind winters; with icy cold temperatures that could make any coastal dweller shiver at the thought of them alone!
Beanies 4 Babies does incredible work to keep the most impacted people a little warmer in Bloemfontein (as well as around SA), and thanks to one inspired radio listener, their mission is expanding to help more little lives in need.
After tuning into an interview with Beanies 4 Babies’ Johané Palko on RSG station, listener Elna Macklin was moved to do more.
Being a grandmother of two premature babies herself, she understands first-hand the importance and life-saving nature of keeping prem babies warm.
Instead of opting to knit products alone, Elna one-upped more traditional ‘how can I help questions’ and asked if she could start another branch for the organisation; the Bethlehem branch in the Eastern Free State.
Beanies 4 Babies believes that every stitch can save a life for low birth weight babes. Elna agreed, and after Elna ticked all the right boxes, she teamed up with others to launch the branch!
The Bethlehem community rallied together to get the new branch enough products to begin, while nurse Lisa Schlebusch and Dr Marié Botes got down to business to prepare the launch.
From radio listener to branch coordinator, Elna’s life changed for the better, and she’ll be part of an organisation that believes in the same energy.
The branch recently opened its doors at Dihlabeng Hospital, just in time for winter.
