A new restaurant has opened its doors and from day one, they are making life a little easier for people in need by selling R10 soup.

Despatch, South Africa (10 August 2023) – When Sikelelwa and Mbulelo Nofemela opened their Ribs etc restaurant in Despatch, Eastern Cape, earlier this month, philanthropy and giving back were first on the menu (literally!). Aside from their key food item being ribs, the pair planned to add an R10 soup to the menu which could be purchased by someone with very little to spare, or as an add-on to a bill so the couple could hand out soups to those in need.

In addition to having a menu item that gives back, a portion of their new kitchen is earmarked to run as a soup kitchen when needed.

They are still in the very early stages of running their restaurant, but with hearts in the right place, it’s bound to be a great one! Sikelelwa and Mbulelo plan to keep the soup on the menu for as long as the restaurant is around. They are working to raise awareness about the soup, so that those who need it can access it and those who want to contribute, can do so.

“You may be wondering why we have a R10 soup on our menu. The idea is to make it affordable to those in need as we understand that the average person doesn’t always afford their meal.

So on those days where money is not easily coming in, let’s serve you soup, better yet if you see someone in need buy them a soup and let’s all contribute to beating the hunger!”

They shared that people are supporting the initiative. Each day the soup changes depending on what they have but mostly, it is either a vegetable variety or chicken.

“We must get aware that alone we can make SOME difference but as a community we can make a BIG difference. We have chosen to use our business to collaborate with YOU to make that BIG difference.”
