The Teddy Bear Clinic’s court preparation programmes use K9 Therapy to help abused children give evidence in court and it comforts them through the ordeal.

Ths South African criminal justice system can be a harsh place to navigate as a child, especially if the child has to face their abuser in court. Clinical Director of the Teddy Bear Clinic, Dr Shaheeda Omar says the courtroom can induce secondary trauma for child abuse victims. That is why the NGO launched their K9 Therapy programme.

The support given by a dog can help ease a child, helping ease their fears and anxiety. Each support dog has a handler that is trained to assist with the psychological needs of the children.

The dogs come from Top Dogs, an organisation that specialises in therapy dogs. Conor Hughes from Top Dogs says dogs can have a calming and therapeutic influence on children. The dogs are taken to various people in need, from the elderly to special needs children as well as offering support to children in court.

“A child goes into a situation where the defence is brought in to discredit their testimony. This often induces secondary trauma and secondary victimisation.”

“K9 Therapy is animal-assisted therapy. It has enhanced social relationships, reduced anxiety and depression and has helped people tell their story.” – Dr Shaheeda Omar, Director at The Teddy Bear Clinic for Abused Children

Having the dogs around creates feelings of security, control and even happiness. The Teddy Bear Clinic also help the children understand the court processes and procedures, making the court appearance more manageable for the child.

The Teddy Bear Clinic teamed up with the Top Dog organisation for this initiative in 2015. It has made a meaningful difference in the lives of the children involved.
