The Homeless World Cup helps get the homeless off the streets through sports engagement, giving purpose and structure to lost lives.
Cardiff, Wales – The Homeless World Cup was started as a way to help the homeless across the globe. The tournament is an international event that sees hundreds of formerly homeless people come together to play soccer.
It all starts with street football partners, who invite homeless people to join their club. The club offers support and structure, guidance and purpose to men and women trapped in a cycle of poverty.
By joining the club, homeless people develop a routine. They find their passion for sport and work on themselves.
“The Homeless World Cup works with a network of 74 organisations representing 74 nations around the world. These National Partners vary in size and structure but they all have one thing in common: they all use the power of football to help people who are homeless and socially disadvantaged.
Our National Partners deliver year-round street football programmes, and select the players who will represent their country at the Homeless World Cup tournament.”
Every year, a team is put together to play at the Homeless World Cup. In South Africa, Oasis – Reach for your dreams, manages the South African team. Oasis is a Non-Profit Organisation (NPO) and focuses on the development and upliftment of underprivileged youth and adults living in marginalised communities through soccer and other activities.
The South African men’s team won their final game against Austria with a score of 5 – 4.
This is the first time we have heard of the tournament but love everything about it! The methods used to combat homelessness are life-changing and inspiring.
The men and women that are blessed to join these teams go on to do great things. Take a look at a small video about the South African squad below; they inspired many at the world cup with their songs.
“When we are singing we forget everything…”
