While bravely navigating her own cancer journey, Sayuri Appalasamy is shining as a beacon of hope for many other warriors after going out of her way to put together an initiative to bring them support.

KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa (14 April 2025) – It takes a truly remarkable individual to go out of their way to not only consider but also help others while dealing with their own battles.

Sayuri Appalasamy, a young girl from KZN who is living with cancer, has inspired and moved us after learning about how she organised a Prom with a Purpose fundraiser—and generously included Rainbows and Smiles as one of the beneficiaries in the midst of facing a recent relapse of her own.

Sayuri’s cancer journey began in 2022, taking her through the highs of remission in 2024 and the challenges of relapse in 2025.

“Despite my fight, many of my cherished dreams remain unfulfilled due to my current diagnosis. However, one shining exception has brought joy and hope to my life: Prom with a Purpose.

“This special event, born from love and generosity, made one of my deepest desires a reality, inspiring hope and resilience in the face of adversity,” Sayuri shares with Rainbows and Smiles.

Prom with a Purpose was held last month and was more than an event, but an opportunity to make a difference in the lives of children battling cancer.

“I am deeply grateful to everyone who contributed to this special event, helping us raise vital funds to support me and those affected by cancer.”

“It’s truly humbling to acknowledge the tireless efforts of organisations that work relentlessly every day to bring hope, smiles, and relief to children and families impacted by cancer,” shares Sayuri who expressed an eagerness to pay this kindness and charity forward.

Her contribution and heart for others haven’t just touched us, but of course the Rainbows and Smiles family too!

“To Sayuri and her family, thank you for your love, generosity, and compassion. Your kindness during such a tender time means the world to us,” Rainbows and Smiles thanks.
