Schoolboys

The #MentortheBoys workshop in Nelson Mandela Bay was a massive success with 100 schoolboys from 10 schools attending talks and workshops designed to better their futures.

The #MentortheBoys initiative was launched by Michelle Brown, owner of Brown’s PR to help schoolboys reach their fullest potential. She was inspired to host the event after noticing that there are thousands of causes empowering young women and schoolgirls, but not many focusing on the boys.

In a patriarchal society, such as South Africa’s, it is normal to see programmes benefitting and empowering women but very little change is being seen in stats. By also focusing on young men, teaching and guiding them, we can address the issues currently being faced in the country.

The event was held at the Hellenic Hall in Nelson Mandela Bay and included speakers such as businessmen, social media experts and motivational speakers. The programme aimed at tackling relevant issues such as personal safety and financial fitness, as well as business ethos and social media etiquette.

“I noticed that there were so many events involving girls, such as the Take a Girl Child to Work day.

“So I realised the need for boys to also be mentored as they are often sidelined in society’s goal of transformation,” Brown said.

“We were targeting pupils from less privileged schools, in order to expose them to a variety of topics and experts they wouldn’t usually encounter in their environment.

“This allows them to realise their potential and what is required to make the most of it.” – Michelle Brown, Brown’s PR & Event Organiser.

Blitzbok Cecil Afrika made an appearance at the event and the schoolboys got really excited.

“I think it is a fantastic initiative and I wanted to be a part of it to simply try to impact and motivate these boys to keep focused on their goals and strive and sacrifice in achieving their dreams,”

This is the first of many mentorships to come. These schoolboys are the men of our future so it is wonderful that they are being given an opportunity to better their futures.
