Friends from Parktown Boys High have wowed by coming together to shave heads in solidarity with their friend and classmate diagnosed with cancer.
Grade 9 Parktown Boys learner Cameron Martin was diagnosed with cancer in July this year. As a show of solidarity and a way to raise funds towards his treatment.
Not only did his classmates and fellow school students come out to show support but also past learners, learners from the neighbouring school, King Edward VII, teachers and employees from nearby businesses. The event was started to raise money to cover the medical costs involved in his cancer treatment.
During the July school hlidays, Cameron was diagnosed with osteosarcoma, a cone cancer, below his right knee. He started Chemotharay and has been receiving it since then. Later this month he will have a surgery to remove the tumour.
“The school has been phenomenal in organising this initiative. We are so overwhelmed and grateful for the support shown here.” – Roger Martin, Cameron’s father.
“It has been a rollercoaster ride dealing with this diagnosis, but the school has been so supportive and amazing. Staff helped him keep up with his work, stay motivated and keep his mind stimulated,”
Cameron’s mother Samantha confirmed that this initiative meant so much more to them than the financial assistance because it showed how much love and support the community had for them during this tough time.
“At Parktown, we are a brotherhood. This event is about supporting Cameron as a brother and anyone else affected by cancer.” – Shashin Govender, Parktown Boy’s student.
Cameron has been grateful for everything his school and community have done for him. We too stand with you Cameron! May you have a speedy recovery and a very successful surgery later the month. Stay strong.
