Shaygam, a local Hout Bay resident, has been taking care of strays in his community for over 13 years and is dedicated to making a bigger change for more animals in South Africa.
Shaygam started saving stray animals at the young age of 10, and now at 23 he has and takes care of 15 dogs and 13 cats.
He also tries to feed and care for as many strays in his community as he can. Determined to make a difference he believes that the animals in the community need to be neutered and spayed to stop them from breeding anymore.
“They mean a lot, they are like my family”
“I love animals!”
Until that happens he continues to make sure all the animals are in good health, if he finds an animal that is injured, the local vet assists and crowdfunding takes place on his Facebook page to help cover the costs of the medical care.
All care provided by Shaygam is given with the help of donations, whether that be food or medical costs being covered.
Hangberg is located in Hout Bay and at times can be dangerous due to gang activity however Shaygam continues to work hard for change, he recruits children from the community to help him care for the animals, helping them stay off the streets and out of gangs. They walk the dogs and learn a sense of responsibility.
“Beacuse I keep them off the streets, I keep them out of trouble”
PLANT Cape Town, a local vegan/vegetarian restaurant, will be hosting a “Party with Purpose” fundraising event for Shaygam, they will be collecting funds, supplies, food and medicine. If you are interested in attending the event or want to make a donation you can contact them here.
