There’s a new reason to celebrate in SA’s music world, as much-loved local artist Sho Madjozi has just announced she’s become a mom for the first time!
South Africa (19 August 2025) – It’s not every day that one of the country’s biggest stars shares such personal news with the world, and Sho Madjozi (real name Maya Wegerif) kept everyone on their toes.
The rapper, singer, and songwriter, famous for global hits like ‘John Cena’ and her vibrant, Xitsonga-inspired style, surprised fans with her announcement on social media last Friday.
Sharing a string of gorgeous maternity photos and a snap of her baby’s tiny hand, Madjozi wrote:
“Y’all enjoy Friday without me. My dream to become a mom has finally come true.”
The post quickly filled up with congratulations from fellow stars, friends, and fans including Pearl Thusi, Makhadzi, Nadia Nakai, Minne Dlamini, Babes Wodumo and many more.
If you missed the signs, you’re not alone. Sho Madjozi managed to keep her pregnancy completely private for nine months, with only a single leaked photo from her baby shower in July offering a hint to fans.
That image showed the artist wearing a traditional Tsonga Xibelani skirt, celebrating with a banner reading: ‘Welcome to Maya’s Baby Shower.’
For those who might be new to her story, Sho Madjozi is one of South Africa’s most influential young artists.
She’s not just a singer and rapper, but a cultural icon known for putting Tsonga music and fashion on the global stage. Her breakout hit ‘John Cena’ was an international sensation, and she’s picked up awards from the BET Awards to the SAMAs.
She’s inspired a new generation to take pride in their roots.
While the new mom hasn’t revealed her baby’s name or any details about her little one’s arrival, it’s clear that she’s over the moon.
“Finally,” she wrote on X.
