From humble beginnings in rural KwaZulu-Natal, Beauty Ngxongo has blossomed into a world-renowned artist.
KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa (19 August 2024) – This Women’s Month, we celebrate the extraordinary women of South Africa. One such remarkable woman is Beauty Ngxongo, who was also recently honoured by the Department of Sport, Arts, and Culture for her exceptional weaving and craft skills.
Art is the lifeblood of South African society. It is a powerful medium for expressing the nation’s rich cultural diversity, historical struggles, and contemporary aspirations. From the vibrant beadwork of indigenous cultures to the contemporary art scene, it provides a platform for dialogue, social commentary, and identity formation.
One woman who has mastered the art of creating stunning African-inspired crafts is Beauty, a master weaver whose exquisite isichumo baskets (woven baskets) are sought by collectors worldwide.

Hailing from Hlabisa in rural KwaZulu-Natal, according to the department, she has elevated traditional craft to a contemporary art form – becoming a design pioneer in the process.
“I count myself very lucky as I was taught by my father as a young girl, went on to make a living out of baskets and was exposed to the overseas market,” Beauty shared.
Using only natural materials and plant-based dyes, Beauty exhibits a mastery of technique and pattern, alongside a deep connectedness with her work.
Her work, celebrated for its intricate patterns and use of natural materials, has earned her international acclaim.
For flying the flag high for indigenous craft art as a catalyst for innovation, Beauty can truly be counted among South Africa’s living human treasures.
