South Africa’s creative and beauty skills have won over the world of television! Cape Town make-up artist Gale Shepherd has won a Daytime Emmy Award, while Warren Gray scored a Daytime Emmy, too, for the art direction of the same show.
Cape Town, South Africa (14 June 2024)—South Africans who worked behind the scenes on a Netflix docuseries have won over the world of television thanks to their Daytime Emmy Award-winning work!
Gale Shepherd, a make-up artist based in Cape Town has been in the industry for decades; even having brushed her magic over the likes of Nelson Mandela shortly after he was released from prison—a moment she described as the ‘only time she cried on set’.
Years on and Gale was nominated for the Hairstyling and Makeup category for her work on Netflix docuseries ‘African Queens: Njinga’ at this year’s Daytime Emmy Awards—a category she went on to win as the Hair and Makeup Department Head!
On the other side of behind-the-scenes work for ‘African Queens: Njinga’, Capetonian Art Director Warren Gray also scooped a Daytime Emmy—giving South Africa even more reason to roar with applause.
“18 years ago, my Wife Malou Van Heijnsbergen told me to follow my dreams and become a Production Designer and today, 3 kids later, with all of her support, I have finally reached a goal to stand up the Emmys and accept [the award]”, Warren said of the proud win.
And adding to the show’s success, was the Emmy for Casting which was accepted by South African-based Casting Director Christa Schamberger and UK-based Casting Director Alissa Rogers. Some of the highlights were casting the South African cast which included Sivuyile (“Siv”) Ngesi, Zethu Dlomo-Mphahlele and Thabo Bopape to name a few.
From the Grammys to the Emmys, South Africans keep on showing the world what our creatives are capable of, and moreover, continue to inspire the next generation to follow their creative callings.
