Spur Good Deed

The Michigan Spur in Noordhoek, Western Cape did the most beautiful thing for one of their biggest fans. Christo, age 51, was born with Down Syndrome and dreamed of working at Spur so the Spur gave him a shift.

Anel Bridges shared massive thanks to their local Spur after the franchise opened its doors to her uncle. Her uncle Christo has Down Syndrome and is 51, he has spent the last year pretending that he worked at Spur. A place he holds dear to his heart.

The family took a chance and contacted the manager of their local Spur and asked if they would help Christo’s dream come true. They immediately said yes and pulled out all the stops to make sure Christo felt like part of the tribe. The franchise arranged a shirt for him and made him a name badge. Anel shared the story on Facebook along with pictures and her greatest thanks.

“My uncle Christo, started this almost ‘imaginary world’ about a year ago that he works at the Spur! Every day he would tell you “Ek moet more weer gaan werk!” (I have to work again tomorrow!). When asked where? He would reply “SPUR”.

So we approached Charne, the manager at Michigan Spur, with the idea of him shadowing one night. Charne spoke to the owner, Eugene, and they were more than happy to help us make this a reality for Christo, who was beyond excited on hearing the news that he will actually be working at the Spur!”

Christo was assigned to a waiter named Arnold and the pair served drinks and food to three tables.

“Christo goes off with Arnold and with the biggest smile ever he helps with carrying menus, drinks, cutlery, etc. Christo does not want to rest, eat or leave! He LOVES it! Arnold treats him with such kindness and patience.”

The evening went really well and Christo made lots of friends. He was even given the tips from the night.

“At the end of the evening, Sascha ‘cashes’ him up and gives him his salary for the evening and we find out that the waiters even contributed extra money from their own pockets towards his pay for the evening! Sascha has also included a lovely little note at the bottom of his payslip.”

“People, I cannot begin to explain the massive impact every person at Spur has made on Christo and how much this means to him and us, his family. Your kindness has restored so much faith in humanity! You might see this as a small gesture but this meant the world to Christo. Forever thank you!”
