A Checkers employee has had his life changed by doing a good deed and becoming a local hero. The supermarket chain has rewarded his bravery by offering to pay for his studies.
Sibusiso Mvalo has been hailed as a local hero after helping a couple avoid a mugging in Cape Town. Paul Stephens and his wife were walking down Strand Street when they were held up at knifepoint by two men. Paul had noticed the road was completely empty but had seen Sibusiso off in the distance.
As the men attacked Paul and his wife, Sibusiso was right there and fought off the two men. Paul was in shock at how fast Sibusiso had reached them. Sibusiso ran as fast as he could to get to the couple. His actions saved their belongings and their outlook on people in Cape Town.
Paul was blown away by Sibusiso’s actions, he had heard about CapeTalk’s Kieno Kammies Show and emailed the host to let him know how amazing his experience with Sibusiso had been.
“He is such a brave guy… he really didn’t need to but he ran and got us out of trouble.” – Paul Stephens
Kieno Kammies interviewed the two men and asked about how the entire situation went down. He then asked Sibusiso about his life and work. Sibusiso confirmed he was employed by the Checkers in Sea Point. It had all taken place while he was on his way home. Sibusiso was inspired to intervene because he too had, had help from a stranger previously and wanted to pay the deed forward.
Kieno asked Sibusiso about his dreams and goals in life and learned that he was really passionate about sports and wanted to study Sports Sciences one day. This is where the heroes life was turned around by his good deed.
Kieno Kammies then asked listeners to call in if they wanted to help Sibusiso reach his dreams. The person who called in blew everyone away.
It turned out that the CEO of the Shoprite Group, Pieter Engelbrecht, had heard the story and called in to assist Sibusiso further his studies. Pieter felt that Sibusiso’s actions upheld the company’s philosophy that customers come first. Pieter even confirmed that Sibusiso will be the employee hero of the month, which will include a great prize.
This is such a happy ending. We love stories like this. You can listen to both radio interviews below. The first clip is Sibusiso and Paul’s story and the second is the chat with Pieter Engelbrecht.
