Love pours in for animal hero Diego as he recovers from a serious accident involving a taxi driver.
Cape Town, South Africa (22 January 2026) – Kennel men are silent heroes in animal welfare.
They’re the ones who tend toward vulnerable, abused, neglected and abandoned animals’ basic needs, every single day. They feed and fill water bowls, clean kennels, walk dogs, and make sure that every animal feels comfortable and safe. In rescues, they often play a big role in socialising animals and spotting when one might be sick, stressed or ready for adoption.
They’re the watchful eyes and the hands that care.

Diego is one of the kennel men at one the Animal Anti-Cruelty League’s bases in Belville.
On Monday, on his way to work, he was hit by a taxi.
“He was thrown into the windscreen and sustained severe injuries to his legs and arms, as well as a traumatic brain injury with bleeding on the brain.” shares the Animal Anti-Cruelty League.
He sustained serious injuries.
“Diego underwent a five-hour operation and will remain in hospital this week under close observation as doctors monitor his recovery.”

As Diego fights for a strong recovery, his team are right behind him. And so are the broader animal welfare community of supporters.
“Diego is a deeply valued member of our team, always wearing a smile and showing so much love and care to the animals he looks after. Our hearts are with him and his loved ones during this incredibly difficult time. Please keep Diego in your thoughts and prayers as he begins his healing journey. We are wishing him strength, comfort, and a full recovery.”
Diego’s absence while he recovers won’t only be felt by his team, but by the many animals he cares for. If you’d like to show support, please contact the Animal Anti-Cruelty League directly. Call 021 951 3010 or email [email protected].
