It is not every day that someone confronts the very thing that threatened their very life and uses it to pour back into others. Last year, Tania Morkel faced a near-fatal fall down a ravine on Table Mountain. This year, with remarkable resolve, she not only returned to climb the mountain but also set out to raise funds for the heroes who rescued her – and she has triumphantly succeeded!
Cape Town, South Africa (23 April 2025) – Deservingly dubbed “Table Mountain’s heroic first lady”, Tania Rosslee Morkel is just over halfway through her personal 64-climb Table Mountain summit, but she has already achieved her fundraising goal!
To bring you up to speed with this heroic woman’s journey, Tania slipped and fell 18 meters down a ravine in September 2023 at the age of 64, instantly sending her into the ICU with multiple severe injuries and fractures.
However, Tania didn’t succumb to these injuries. After a remarkable recovery, Tania took on a herculean effort to not just go back to climb Table Mountain, but to do it 64 times and to raise R64,000 for the Wilderness Search And Rescue (WSAR) – the crew that rescued and saved her, as well as the SANParks – Table Mountain National Park.
And as of last week Thursday, Tania completed 38 out of her 64 climbs AND raised R65,500! Audaciously surpassing her amazing goal!
Good Things Guy got in touch with this inspiring heroine, who shared that the experience has mimicked her early recovery in many ways.
“While I expected it to be primarily a physical challenge, it turned out to be a mental game I played daily. In the beginning, I constantly feared falling ill, injuring myself, or extreme weather events ruining the challenge.
“On day 18, I had a nauseous and dizzy episode following a reaction to a natural supplement, and I ended up in the Cableway First Aid room.”
Admittedly, Tania’s confidence did take a knock after that and having her husband in the hospital at around the same time did not make things any easier for her. However, through counselling, Tania has been able to dig deep, become resourceful and learnt to do each day’s walk without worrying about the next day.
“Deep contentment settled in me, and I knew I couldn’t control external forces, only my response to them,” she shares.
With 21 more climbs to go and having raised an impressive R68,500 to date, Tania is overwhelmed with gratitude for each and every one who has sown into her cause.
“I’m grateful for the incredible support I’ve received for the 64×64 WSAR & TMNP Table Mountain Challenge! I want to extend my heartfelt thanks to everyone who donated, shared, and encouraged me along the way.
“Even though I have faced many challenges during this time, everyone’s generosity and encouragement have fueled my journey immeasurably. I am excited to see what more we can achieve by supporting these two worthy causes”.
Tania’s determination inspires awe and celebrates the incredible power of the human will to overcome adversity and give back.
If you happen to be in the Mother City and around the iconic landmark, you may just spot her ascending the mountain, driven by sheer gratitude and resilience.
