Taxi Driver

Sometimes it takes a little time for us to follow our dreams, we need to plan, save and prepare to reach our dreams, Pelican Khumalo, a local taxi driver, made his dream happen.

Johannesburg, South Africa – Pelican Khumalo has always dreamed of becoming a teacher, but he didn’t have the means to do so right away. Instead, he became a taxi driver, waiting for the moment he could reach for his dream.

Eventually, Pelican enrolled for his teaching degree, using his income as a taxi driver to pay for his Unisa fees. Starting in 2016, Pelican would visit his local library to do his course work, and when he was working, he would study while he waited at the taxi rank for his taxi to fill up.

According to Kae News, Pelican wakes up at 3 am every day, working full out until 9 pm each night. He credits his success to excellent time management.

“Good time management skills are important. If you want something hard enough you will definitely get it. You need to prioritise and make sacrifices “ – Pelican Khumalo

He graduated this month with a BEd degree from Unisa and is now qualified to teach grades 4 to 9. Pelican is now hoping to get a teaching job in time for 2020. He is qualified to teach Maths, IsiZulu, Life Orientation and Social Sciences.

We wish Pelican all the best in his new career and hope he brings joy to his students. With the dedication he showed his studies, we know he will work tirelessly to ensure his students get the very best.
