Yaseen Abrahams & Ashraf Cassiem are tired of seeing the elderly struggle to pay taxi fares with their small pensions so the duo is helping in the best way.
Taxi guard Yaseen Abrahams and driver Ashraf Cassiem have done something truly wonderful for the elderly. The pair has recently become a big hit with the public after a Facebook post was shared with their story included.
The story told of their efforts to support the elderly by offering anyone over 70, free rides. The pair were inspired to do so because of the local gangs using them as free transport.
“Every day we get taxed by the gangsters who ask for money or make us give them lifts, so I thought then why can’t the old people who really need it, not ride for free? A lot of them are sick and can’t walk to the clinics and stuff.” – Yaseen Abrahams
Yaseen lost his mother in 2016 after she had multiple heart attacks and strokes. He said it nearly broke his heart but that was the catalyst towards offering free rides. Pensioners aged 70 and older can ride for free from 9 am each weekday and after 10 am on weekends if they need to go to Athlone or Cape Town.
Since the Facebook post went viral, Yaseen has hoped that it will inspire other taxi drivers and guards to offer free rides to the elderly in need.
“I hope they will also do this and together we can help make the last years of their lives better. They have given so much to us as children and as a community,”
The duo work in Bonteheuwel and are making their community proud.
