Gary Thomas and his family have made a tangible difference at REEA Hostel, improving facilities, supporting staff and residents, and creating lasting moments of joy.
Johannesburg, South Africa (27 November 2025) – Johannesburg’s REEA Hostel recently had cause to celebrate, thanks to the generosity of Gary Thomas and his family. Their hands-on support has made a real difference in the lives of residents and staff. The foundation, which provides 24-hour care for adults living with epilepsy and other neurological conditions, also runs outreach programmes for HIV/AIDS orphans, food security initiatives, and literacy and day-care programmes, creating a lifeline for the community it serves.
Gary Thomas first connected with the hostel through social worker Elinor Demetrio, quickly showing genuine interest in understanding where his support could have the most impact. He began by donating everyday essentials like cutlery and cleaning supplies, and installing TORK dispensers for soap, paper towels, and toilet paper. These improvements improved life for staff and residents.
When the Delta Café faced ongoing septic tank issues, Gary stepped in to coordinate a solution, saving the organisation both time and costs. Later, he suggested upgrading the facility with epoxy flooring to replace worn carpets. Through his network, REEA secured funding for the project, and the flooring was expertly installed, creating a cleaner, safer, and more hygienic environment for everyone.
The family’s generosity did not stop at facilities. Gary’s daughter, Tarryn, joined staff in preparing a special meal for residents and gifted personalised mugs to each person, while his son Jason, is also actively involved in supporting the hostel. Their involvement was a personal and family-oriented, deeply resonating with the REEA community.
During a celebratory lunch, REEA manager Alex Sheffield took the opportunity to thank the Thomas family for their ongoing commitment, noting how their support has strengthened both the hostel and the broader community.
The residents and staff have welcomed the Thomas family with open hearts, and the warmth is mutual. Through acts both big and small, the they have shown how generosity and engagement can create meaningful, lasting impact in people’s lives.
