Tyla has made history for our country’s music scene once again after she walked away with a ‘moonperson’ and became the first South African to win a VMA!

Global (12 September 2024) — It was a big night for artists across genres as the MTV VMAs (Video Music Awards) united global superstars for this year’s edition of the famed award show. But for some massive stars, yesterday’s VMAs meant much more than adding another ‘moonperson’ to their nightstand. Instead, for artists like South Africa’s Tyla, it meant making history as the first of their country to win a VMA and unlocking a whole new level of inspiration for the next generation of musicians at home.

Up for three awards (Best New Artist, Best R&B Video and the Best Afrobeats categories), Tyla walked away with a VMA for the latter; beating out Usher and Burna Boy in the process.

For South Africa’s sweetheart, winning the award was “just so special”, to quote her acceptance speech.

However, Tyla also made a point of taking the time up on stage to call the music industry’s attention to the fact that African music is diverse and offers more than what can fit under just one category like Afrobeats.

Nonetheless, the award is another big win from Tyla for South Africa, another recent honour—the Global Impact Award from Billboard’s R&B No. 1s!
