South Africa’s Tyla could make history as the first South African to win these VMAs’ categories: Best New Artist, Best R&B Video and Best Afrobeats!

Global (06 September 2024) — With a Grammy under her belt, a MET Gala in her memory book and fans from all over the world in her corner, South Africa’s Tyla Seethal has made a star-studded, household name for herself over the past year. Now, she stands at the cusp of a first for South Africa after being nominated for three MTV VMAs’ categories (Video Music Awards) that no South African artist has ever won before.

Considering that Tyla’s music career has been on such a striking upward trajectory with a momentum that really took off late last year thanks to her hit, Water, it’s entirely possible that she could take home one if not three VMAs come later this month—something that we’re sure would make all of South Africa groove in celebration in true traffic officer fashion.

Up against giants like Alicia Keys and SZA and set to share the audience with the likes of Beyoncé and Taylor Swift, Tyla’s certainly in the biggest of the big leagues for musicians. But, as she proved at the Grammys and the MET, she is no stranger to holding her own and making South Africa enormously proud in the process!

This year, Tyla is up for the Best New Artist category along with breakout star Chappel Roan, the Best R&B Video category (where SZA and Alicia Keys have also been nominated) and the Best Afrobeats category with Burna Boy, Usher, Peelz and Tems.

However, all is set to be revealed only next week on 11 September. Until then, South Africa will be sending her all the luck in our nation and voting for our star here!
