Tyla continues to make South Africa beam with pride. Her latest career feat? The track that put her on the map, ‘Water’, has officially surpassed one billion streams on Spotify; making her the first African solo artist to achieve this, ever!

Global (21 February 2025) — Success and South Africa’s Tyla continue to come as a package deal to the point where it’s hard to remember a time when the world didn’t know who the Jozi singer was. With numerous achievements under her belt already, the superstar adds another thanks to the news that her smash hit and the track that put her on the map, ‘Water’, has officially surpassed one billion streams on Spotify!

Not only is this the kind of accomplishment dreams are made of for any artist, but it is also one that’s put Tyla in the history books (again). She is the first African solo artist to achieve this, ever!

Fun fact:  Tyla’s “Water” also made history when it became the African song to achieve both Platinum status and double Platinum status in record time.

“Tyla’s success is an inspiration to aspiring artists across Africa and the world,’ remarked Phiona Okumu, Head of Music at Spotify.

Other achievements from the 23-year-old include winning a Grammy, becoming the first South African to win a VMA (Video Music Award), and as of recent, her first British Vogue cover!

As Vogue put it perfectly:

“Viral lyrics, infectious dance routines, show-stopping fashion… In the blink of an eye, South African superstar Tyla has become music’s most intoxicating new mononym.”

Meanwhile, in other news where South African musicians made us say ‘No DNA, just RSA’, Wouter Kellerman added yet another Grammy to his tally thanks to his win at the 67th Annual Grammy Awards!
