The UCT Underwater Club have joined forces with the Two Oceans Aquarium to raise funds for turtles and to help 50 teens enrol in the Marine Science course.

Cape Town, South Africa (25 March 2024) – 85 divers are planning to spend 24 hours diving in the name of charity. The UCT Underwater Club, alongside the Two Oceans Aquarium, is thrilled to present the Diver24, an annual fundraiser, on April 6th, 2024.

They are raising funds via BackaBuddy and hosting an exciting raffle in the hope of raising enough to support 50 grade 8 and 9 learners from under-resourced schools, in the Marine Science course.

During the 24-hour event, over 85 divers will come together to complete a 24-hour relay dive. Divers will be rotating in and out of the I&J Ocean Exhibit, keeping the excitement going all day and night!

“Our theme for this year is ‘Our Future’. Therefore with the money we raise we aim to build future leaders and conserve our oceans for future generations. We will do this by donating all the money raised to The Two Oceans Aquarium Foundation.

The money will be split between their Education program where we will sponsor 50 grade 9 learners from an under-resourced school on a Marine Science course, preparing them for an ocean-related future and giving them the opportunity to develop leadership skills. We will also be sponsoring a turtle rehabilitation & release program through the Conservation program to help ensure the conservation of the endangered species and protecting the fragile marine ecosystem. With such big hopes, we have set our fund-raising goal to R45,000, a new record for the event.”

The event will take place on April 6th, and those who can attend can purchase a R10 raffle ticket, which has incredible prizes up for grabs.

Divers will be hosting games for children from within the tank, making the experience fun for all involved.

Raffle prizes include:

  • 2x Cape RADD Snorkel for Science experience.
  • Stand Up Paddleboarding (SUP) Cape Town experience for two.
  • A Trinidad dive mask valued at R1 350, and another from Orca Industries.
  • Hampers from Shackleton Breweries, Okja, Back2Nature, and Salteez.
  • Vouchers for Faithful To Nature (R2 500) and Orca Industries.
  • and more!

If you would like to support their fundraiser and cannot be there on the day, the divers have a BackaBuddy where you can support their efforts: https://www.backabuddy.co.za/campaign/diver24-raising-funds-for-the-two-oceans.
