The Ubuntu Surf School has made a massive difference in 6 underprivileged children’s lives, teaching them basic swimming and surfing skills.
The surf school is based in Muizenberg and teaches underprivileged children from the Masiphumele (which means “we will succeed in isiXhosa) township how to swim and surf. Using donated boards and wetsuits, their programme has taught six boys basic skills in swimming, surfing and water safety.
The programme has developed a holistic approach that incorporates a variety of life skills, such as interpersonal relationships, confidence, ocean awareness, and respect for others and the environment.
The young boys are constantly faced with poor access to basic needs and services such as clean water and sanitation, as well as gang violence, substance abuse, and widespread poverty.
Constant exposure to these elements can have a profound impact on the psychological development and well-being of a child. Our program has used surfing and the ocean as an effective medium in which the children are able to grow as individuals and express themselves freely without concern for the challenges that dictate daily life in the township.
Tao Farren-Hefer created a video showcasing what the surf school does and how even one day creates a change in the life of an underprivileged child. The video was also shared to raise awareness of their fundraising which will allow the programme to take on more children. You can find more information here.
