Forced to walk two hours to get to school every day in a tattered uniform and broken shoes – it took just one person noticing a little boy’s adversity to remarkably turn his life around in the most heartwarming of ways.

Quarry Heights, South Africa (26 March 2025) – “Ooh, at least someone cares.” These are the heart-piercing words of a young boy named Nhlakanipho, who had endured many hard days, invisible to the eyes of many, was finally seen by a volunteer at Mission Thando Khabazela Soup Kitchen.

Wearing a worn-out and broken school uniform, Thando couldn’t turn away or ignore the compelling feelings to help bring some form of aid and support to this young boy.

“It broke my heart, and I knew I had to do something!”

“I asked the principal if I could take a picture of the child, and she agreed. I then reached out to the Angel Network Durban, and they kindly offered to provide a new school uniform,” shared the volunteer.

In a moment that would likely be etched in Nhlakanipho’s heart for many years to come, he held the new uniform in his hands, and with a smile on his face, all he could say was:

“Ooh, at least someone cares.”

For a young boy who has faced the hardship of walking two hours every morning from Effingham informal settlement to Quarry Heights Primary School because his mom can’t afford school transport, this heartfelt gesture wasn’t just a normal uniform handover. It was a moment that made Nhlakanipho feel loved and cared for, and he came to understand that he didn’t have to go through life’s difficulties alone.

And when his story was shared on social media, good folk lent a hand to make sure he could go to school using a school transport service like the rest of his peers!

“Thanks to the kindness of our angels, Nhlakanipho’s life is transforming in ways we never thought possible! His confidence has soared, and he’s now enjoying the simple joys of school life, like riding the school transport and wearing his beautiful school uniform with pride!

“We’re grateful for the opportunity to be a part of Nhlakanipho’s journey and can’t wait to see what the future holds for this bright young star. A huge thank you to our amazing donors and supporters who made this possible” the Thando Mission volunteer said.

If you needed a reminder of how taking a moment to care and extend kindness can incredibly change a life, this is it.
