Heat

The Western Cape’s weather reached scorching hot temperatures last week. While many escaped from the heat to pools, the welcomed icy sea and cool homes, animals in underserved areas did not have the same luxury. So, heroes brought cool relief to them!

Wolwerivier, South Africa (07 March 2024) — Many parts of the Western Cape were blisteringly hot last week as we all felt something a step far beyond summer heat, and more akin to a snippet of Climate Change. While many of us had the luxury of being able to escape to cool homes (and, for some, welcomed icy waters), dogs and cats in underserved communities like the Wolwerivier settlement did not have that opportunity.

Without a voice or the means to ask for help, animals are completely reliant on the consideration of their humans. Luckily, humans and regular heroes part of the WOW Project were hot on the crisis’s tail.

With a van heading for Wolwerivier packed with cool water containers, ice, and other treats, the WOW Project ensured that the animals would get the overlooked assistance they urgently needed.

Thanks to their thoughtfulness, they were able to make a day of difference.

The WOW Project helped out with getting over a hundred cats and dogs with bowls of water, ice and food! Not stopping there at the immediate heat treatment, they also made sure that the animals were treated for ticks, were dewormed and sterilised.

These efforts are the mini-rescue moments that not only helped the struggling animals, but showed people in the area what caring for a four-legged friend looks like.

Meanwhile, in other news where surprises showed up at the right time, Charity Begins With Me delivered enough pizzas to make the Leaning Tower of Pisa jealous! For the children who couldn’t have been more thrilled, this was the very first time many of them enjoyed pizza. You can read all about how Joburgers near and far made this possible here!
