“I’m in grade 5, and I challenge all the other schools to help. This is not right.”

Eastern Cape, South Africa (12 February 2026) – As the Uitenhage SPCA fights to secure a new home after being ordered to vacate the property it has operated from for more than 50 years, South Africans are stepping in to back the animal welfare organisation.

One of the loudest voices is a Grey Junior School grade 5 pupil named Riley van Eck.

After hearing that the SPCA might have to close its doors – and fearing what that could mean for the animals in its care – Riley wrote an email to his principal at Grey Junior School, Grant Butler, asking if the school could help raise funds.

Together, they filmed a short video appeal and shared it online.

That video blew up and received more than 55,000 views within five days! As per The Herald, Riley and his school community had raised R10,600 through voucher booklets sold via the Karri App, all directed to the SPCA’s relocation fund.

The fate of the SPCA and its animals moved Riley into action, and he’s only 10 years old. That deserves a hero badge. The SPCA would agree – they left a special ‘thank you’ to Riley on Facebook.

“Riley, We just wanted to send you a very big, heartfelt THANK YOU from everyone at SPCA Uitenhage and District. What you did took courage, kindness and a huge heart. Not many people your age (or even grown-ups!) would think to stand up for animals the way you did. Your video, your voice and your determination have helped real animals get food, care and a second chance at life. That is something truly special.” the SPCA wrote. “Because of you, dogs and cats who can’t speak for themselves are being seen and supported. You’ve reminded our whole community that one person – even one young person – can make a real difference when they choose to care.”

The team ended in saying that they’re proud and grateful for Riley’s compassion. And so are the animals.

In response, Riley’s mom, Roz van Eck, left this comment:

“Riley read your message and it brought a little tear to his eye – of happiness (and everyone elses messages too. THANK YOU) he is truly so overwhelmed by all the beautiful messages and ALL the support!” she shared.

The SPCA’s situation remains urgent. As previously reported, the organisation has until 20 February to vacate its current premises and is now operating out of two shipping containers while trying to secure a permanent home. Their crowdfund, which aims to raise R2.7 million to purchase a property, is currently sitting at R713,415 – 26% of the goal.

In the middle of uncertainty, Riley’s initiative has brought hope and inspiration to others who have the power to make an impact, too.

“I’m in grade 5 and I challenge all the other schools to help. This is not right.” said Riley in his video appeal.
