A little girl fighting cancer was gifted a little lamb of comfort before her first major operation. Wanting to give other hospitalised children who feel scared the same comfort, she inspired a wonderful initiative—Zhara’s Little Lamb Project.
South Africa (03 July 2023) — Before Zhara du Toit’s first major operation, the 11-year-old battling cancer was gifted a little lamb. Her soft friend gave her strength and comfort through the scary experience; something she wanted to make sure all hospitalised children have. Soon Zhara’s Little Lamb Project was born!
As Zhara is spending a lot of time in hospital this year due to chemotherapy, she will see a lot of children who might be nervous, afraid and in need of comfort. Zhara’s Little Lamb Project aims to see more smiles than scared faces by encouraging kind knitters and crocheters from all over South Africa to create little lambs for the children to keep close.
Zhara shares:
“I have a heartfelt desire to give each child who comes to the hospital a soft little lamb that can provide them with courage when they feel scared, just like my lamb comforts me.”
Helping out with the project is non-profit 2Cchange who are also advocates for sustainable travel. Although this mission is premised on a different kind of travel—making sure the comfort lambs reach their new companions.
Since it began, Zhara’s Little Lamb Project has brought significant joy to families and their little fighters.
Just Look at All The Lamb Love!
Of the impact for one family, parent Shiraaz Adams shared that his boy who underwent open heart surgery will treasure the lamb he got when he was so fragile, for a lifetime. He is now fully recovered.
Get Involved
Anyone who crochets or knits is invited to join the project. If you don’t have the skills to create, you’re more than welcome to offer a donation so someone else can knit a comfort lamb from you.
