Dedicated to shaping young water enthusiasts into confident athletes and future lifeguards, the Pirates Surf Lifesaving Club is inviting the next generation to dive into another exciting Nippers season.

Durban, South Africa (18 August 2026) – Young people interested in diving into something as exciting as it is purpose-driven, come to the front!

The Pirates Surf Lifesaving Club is inviting families and young water enthusiasts to its Open Day on Sunday, 30 August, as the club celebrates the start of another exciting Nippers season and showcases the lifesaving opportunities available to children in the community.

Founded in February 1928, Pirates is approaching its centenary and proudly stands as the third-oldest lifesaving club in South Africa. Almost 100 years later, the club continues to play an important role in developing young people through surf lifesaving, sport, water safety and community involvement.

At the heart of Pirates is its Nippers programme, which aims to nurture children from a young age and develop them into confident, capable young athletes and, ultimately, future lifeguards who can contribute to keeping our beaches safe.

Nipper Director Coral Davey is excited about the new season and the continued growth of the programme.

“Lifesaving brings so much to our communities and to our children. It’s about far more than competing. We teach children vital water skills, confidence, teamwork, discipline and lifesaving skills that can stay with them for life. Seeing the steady growth of our Nippers programme at Pirates is incredibly rewarding,” says Davey.

The Pirates programme caters for Nipplets aged 5 to 8 and Nippers aged 8 to 14, with children of all abilities encouraged to get involved.

For younger children, the focus is on introducing them to the water in a fun, safe and positive environment while developing basic water awareness and confidence. As children progress through the Nippers programme, they are introduced to more advanced surf skills, fitness, rescue techniques, competition and the responsibilities that come with lifesaving.

The long-term goal is to create a pathway from enthusiastic young Nippers to skilled young lifesavers who understand the importance of water safety and are equipped to become the next generation of lifeguards serving South Africa’s beaches.

Pirates Surf Lifesaving Club’s Open Day on 30 August is an opportunity for families to come and experience the club, meet the Nipper team and discover what the programme has to offer.

With almost a century of history behind it and a new generation coming through the ranks, Pirates is looking forward to continuing its proud tradition of developing young people through lifesaving.

For more information, families are encouraged to attend the Open Day or contact Pirates Surf Lifesaving Club and the Nippers team by emailing [email protected] or connecting on social media.
