Golden City Rollers have spent 16 years growing roller derby in South Africa and taking the Johannesburg league to the international stage.

Johannesburg, South Africa (08 October 2026) – There was a time when roller derby was something most South Africans probably knew very little about. Then, in 2010, it rolled into Johannesburg.

Sixteen years later, Golden City Rollers are celebrating a pretty remarkable chapter in South African sport, and the journey has included plenty of bruises, big personalities, international trips and, of course, a lot of skating.

The league began life as C-Max Roller Derby, emerging in Johannesburg at a time when roller derby was still a complete unknown on the African sporting landscape.

It was very much a DIY operation in those early days: tattoos, fishnets, limited equipment and plenty of enthusiasm for a sport that had never before been played competitively on the continent.

Today, the organisation describes itself as the founder of modern roller derby on the African continent and has established itself as one of the leading forces in the sport in South Africa and beyond.

The league has also played a major role in putting South African roller derby on the international map.

Golden City Rollers skaters have formed a significant part of Team South Africa at the Roller Derby World Cups, including the 2014, 2018 and 2025 editions. The league also hosted Africa’s first pan-African roller derby tournament in 2020, bringing teams from across the continent together in Johannesburg.

And that is perhaps what makes the 16-year milestone so interesting.

What started as a niche sport with a small group of people on skates has grown into a competitive community with international ambitions and a history of helping develop roller derby in South Africa.

Roller derby has always been fast, physical and colourful, while challenging some of the traditional ideas around what women’s sport is supposed to look like.

Golden City Rollers have leaned into that identity from the beginning.

Now, 16 years after those first wheels started turning, the league is marking the occasion with its “Super Sweet Sixteenth” in November.

There will be glitter, mirror balls, plenty of action and, presumably, a few more hip-checks than you would normally expect from a birthday celebration.

But beneath all the birthday sparkle is a much bigger story, a Johannesburg league helped introduce an unfamiliar sport to Africa, stuck with it and built something that has lasted for 16 years.
