Jesse Clegg performed his late dad’s iconic song for Redhill’s little learners, and they knew every word!
Johannesburg, South Africa (29 June 2026) – Looking for a reason to smile on a Monday? This is it!
Jesse Clegg recently visited Redhill School as part of the early learning centre’s Africa Day celebrations. There, he performed his late father Johnny Clegg’s iconic song, Great Heart. A song that has meant so much to South Africans for generations.
The school shares that the learners had been practising the chorus of the song before his visit, and when it was finally time to sing together, they sang their hearts out, and knew every word.
“Having practised the chorus beforehand, our students couldn’t wait to join in, and the excitement and enthusiasm on their faces said it all.” the school shared.
The song itself has a special place in South African music history. It was written by Clegg and released with Savuka in 1987. It carried a hopeful message of unity and shared humanity at a time of racial segregation and strife in the country.
“Celebrating Africa Day last week with the little ones at Redhill. Listen to how well they knew the words!? It was a wonderful experience to sing this special song with a new generation of voices.” shared Jesse, along the video of his performance.
The school performance comes ahead of Jesse’s new recording of Great Heart, which will appear on the upcoming Scatterlings album.
The album celebrates Johnny Clegg’s musical legacy through new interpretations of his songs and ties in with the Scatterlings music festival, taking place in Johannesburg on 1 August, where a stellar lineup of South African artists will come together to celebrate local music and heritage.
