A silent protector has fallen. To those who had the pleasure of knowing him, Koa was a truly extraordinary K9 who was far more than just a dog. He was a brave soul and a guardian for endangered wildlife.
Mpumalanga, South Africa (30 June 2025) – Koa was no ordinary dog. He was a guardian, a companion, a legend.
The loyal K9 partner to Care for Wild Rhino Sanctuary’s K9 handler, Oom Deon Combrink, sadly crossed over to the rainbow bridge this weekend. Following many years of dedicated service, the admired pair recently stepped into a well-earned retirement. Together, Koa and Oom Deon were a formidable force who shared a deep bond.
“Through freezing winters and sweltering summers, Koa patrolled faithfully. He was deeply connected to the rhinos, knowing the rhythms of the orphans, their behaviours and the bottle-feeding times. He walked alongside them through their healing, quietly keeping watch,” Care for Wild said in a heartfelt tribute.

The four-legged hero was adored by staff and volunteers, not only for his strength and discipline but also for his gentle, affectionate soul.
“A was a silent protector, a force of nature. Fierce, loyal, and unshakably brave. Our love, thoughts and prayers are with Oom Deon as he mourns his dear friend, his companion, his comrade in arms.”
The news of Koa’s passing has deeply saddened many who had the privilege of meeting him, with social media filled with tributes praising his heroic efforts. According to some, you couldn’t find a better dog than Koa or a better handler than Oom Deon on the planet.
The Care for Wild team further thanked the special dog for his invaluable service in protecting our precious rhinos.
“Rest peacefully, dearest Koa. Your footprints will forever echo through the sanctuary. You will never be forgotten.”
