From eating solid food to fiercely guarding her favourite blanket, the rescued serval kitten continues to celebrate heartwarming milestones on her road to recovery.
Johannesburg, South Africa (08 July 2026) – Just weeks ago, little Freya’s future hung in the balance. The young serval kitten arrived at Selpark Veterinary Clinic in critical condition after being rescued in late June, but today she’s proving exactly why wild animals never stop fighting.
Under the care of veterinarian Dr Garith Newby, Freya has made remarkable progress and is slowly returning to what every young serval should be: curious, feisty and full of attitude. When Dr Newby reached into her enclosure to swap out her blanket, Freya had other plans.
Earlier that day, her food had been served on the blanket, and as far as she was concerned, it now belonged to her. Determined not to let it go, the tiny serval dug in, refusing to surrender her prized possession despite Dr Newby’s best efforts.
For the rescue team, it was the perfect sign. Just days earlier, Freya had been fighting for her life. Now she was fiercely defending a blanket.
While her progress has been steady rather than dramatic, every meal she finishes, every playful growl and every glimpse of her mischievous personality is another reminder of just how far she’s come.
The rescue team has even joked that Dr Newby must have some magical powers.
“We’re beginning to suspect that Dr Garith’s veterinary degree may actually be a Hogwarts diploma.”
Behind the humour, however, is heartfelt gratitude.
The team says Dr Newby’s patience, expertise and dedication have given Freya a second chance when many might have lost hope. With each passing day, the tiny serval is writing a new chapter.
