Several South Africans have placed themselves among the leading contenders as the African Chess Championships reach the halfway stage.
Jwaneng, Botswana (23 June 2026) – With the African Individual Chess Championships reaching the halfway mark in Jwaneng, Botswana, South Africa remains well positioned to challenge for top honours in both the Open and Women’s sections.
A strong opening week has left several South Africans within touching distance of the leaders, with the team carrying plenty of momentum into the tournament’s decisive final rounds.
Two of the country’s standout performers, Caleb Levitan and Banele Mhango, remain unbeaten after five rounds and find themselves firmly in contention heading into the business end of the tournament.
Levitan has continued the excellent form that saw him defeat a national champion earlier in the week, while Mhango has quietly put together one of the most consistent campaigns among the South African contingent. Their strong starts have positioned them among the leading group as the race for continental honours gathers pace.
They are not alone. Veteran Grandmaster Kenny Solomon remains within striking distance despite a challenging fifth round, while Raphael Felix has also produced several impressive performances, including a draw against one of the tournament favourites earlier in the competition.
The women’s team has also shown encouraging signs. Hayley Nel and Anzel Laubscher both picked up valuable victories in Round Five to strengthen their positions, while Chisomo Boshoma continues to build on an impressive tournament.
After five rounds, South Africa finds itself with multiple players still in contention and every opportunity to challenge for top honours.
