Surfer Steve Rice caught a massive wave during a competition in Pe’ahi, Maui – it came crashing down on him, breaking his femur in five places.
South Africa (10 November 2021) – Steve Rice, a talented South African-born surfer, was recently in a pretty bad surfing accident that led to a painful broken leg. His friend and fellow surfer Tanner Waite started a GoFundMe to cover his medical bills in Maui.
Tanner explained that the accident took place on November 2nd, 2021, at one of the worlds premier big waves, Pe’ahi, on the island of Maui.
“Steve was caught inside when the set of the day arrived and detonated on his head. At one point during his beatdown the slack in his leash and the power of the waves broke his femur into several pieces. He was immediately rushed to the emergency room thanks to the skill and knowledge of the Maui safety teams and Pe’ahi Hui.
Steve has since undergone surgery on his femur and is currently stable and in high spirits. He is known for his humble, quiet nature, and for standing out amongst the worlds best when the waves get critical. He is the first to turn around and help anybody in need and will do whatever he can to support his friends.” – Tanner Waite
Steve’s surgery was a success, and we managed to catch up with him this morning. He shared that he has been released from the hospital and waiting on clearance to travel. He is quite immobile now, but once all is approved, Steve will be coming home to South Africa to recover and complete his rehabilitation.
