A new global retirement ranking has placed South Africa firmly among the world’s most desirable destinations for retirees.
South Africa (28 June 2026) – While many of us are busy debating traffic, water shedding (is this the new load shedding), or the latest headlines, people across the globe are looking at our country and seeing something completely different. They see breathtaking landscapes, world-class wildlife, excellent private healthcare, welcoming communities, incredible value for money and a lifestyle unmatched by the rest of the world.
And now, a new global ranking has placed South Africa among the very best places on Earth to spend your retirement.
According to The Expatriate Group’s Retirement Abroad Index 2026, South Africa has been named the 5th-best country in the world to retire, earning a place alongside countries long favoured by expats seeking their next chapter.
The annual index was created to help prospective retirees make informed decisions about relocating overseas. Rather than focusing solely on beautiful scenery or warm weather, the report evaluates countries using five equally weighted factors that play a major role in retirement planning: healthcare quality, visa accessibility, health insurance requirements, cost of living and ease of settling into local communities for expats.
This year’s top 10 countries are:
- Philippines
- Thailand
- Colombia
- Portugal
- South Africa
- Sri Lanka
- Dubai
- Malaysia
- Mexico
- Indonesia
We often speak about the natural beauty of our country because it deserves every bit of the praise. Few places offer coastlines stretching across two oceans, iconic wildlife, mountains, vineyards, vibrant cities and wide-open spaces all within a day’s journey. But retirement is about far more than postcard views. South Africa offers access to internationally recognised private healthcare, a favourable cost of living compared with many Western countries, diverse property options and a climate that allows people to enjoy an active outdoor lifestyle for much of the year. Add to that our rich cultural heritage, world-famous hospitality and the warmth that visitors so often mention after spending time here and it’s easy to understand why retirees from around the world are taking notice.
While conversations around immigration are often complex, this ranking is specifically about people who choose to retire abroad through the proper legal channels. South Africa offers recognised immigration routes for retirees who meet the necessary requirements, allowing them to make our country home while contributing positively to local communities and the economy. Every new resident who chooses South Africa brings more than luggage. Many purchase homes, support local businesses, create employment, spend within the tourism and hospitality sectors, access private healthcare and contribute foreign-earned income to our economy. When people choose South Africa, they’re often choosing to invest in it too.
While no destination is perfect, it’s encouraging to know that people across the globe still see South Africa as a place worth building a future in. And we think that’s a good thing!
