His journey almost took a different path in 2023 when local coaches reportedly diverted him away from the prestigious Engen Knockout Challenge to play in rural tournaments instead. It was only after his uncle stepped in that he eventually travelled to Durban, where Langalibalele Sports Academy coach Wonder Mnguni finally had the chance to watch him play. Since then, he has been remarkable.
After making his name at Orlando Pirates, the defender secured a move to Chicago Fire FC, earned selection as a 2026 MLS All-Star and even received more fan votes than Lionel Messi in the All-Star voting.
Now, with Bafana Bafana making history at the FIFA World Cup, Mbokazi’s stock continues to rise.
