South African Goodbye

A hilarious social media take has locals nodding in agreement after perfectly capturing why leaving a gathering can take almost as long as the event itself.

South Africa (10 July 2026) – South African content creator, Marcius van Antwerp, has social media laughing after perfectly describing what many locals know all too well, and that’s leaving a social gathering is rarely as simple as saying, “I’m off.”

Announcing that you’re leaving isn’t actually your departure. It’s merely the beginning.

It usually starts with the classic, “Okay, guys, we’re going.” But instead of heading straight to the car, that’s when someone suddenly remembers a story they’ve been meaning to tell since 2019, and before you know it, you’re comfortably settled into another conversation.

If you somehow make it to the front door, don’t celebrate just yet. There’s still the gate chat to get through.

Marcius jokes that in South Africa, leaving too quickly can even raise suspicion.

Head off without the traditional farewell marathon and someone is bound to ask if everything is okay. Did someone offend you? Was there family drama? Did you not get enough meat from the braai?

Whether it’s chatting at the front door, lingering by the gate or squeezing in one last story through the driver’s window, one thing is certain… a local goodbye isn’t just a goodbye.
