Every year, the Tour de France brings with it bicycle donations for South African children but this year additional bicycles are being donated to adults
South Africa (21 September 2020) – The joy of getting your first bicycle is one you remember forever. Many children have grown into adults and never had that joy. That is until now, of course.
Every year the Tour de France donates 176 bicycles to Qhubeka. One for each rider in the race. This year additional bicycles are being donated to the Heroes on Bikes campaign.
Over 1,000 bicycles are going to those that need them most in this COVID-19 affected year. The 1,000 Heroes on Bikes campaign is working to support people that help their communities.
Heroes on Bikes started as a wild idea. It was a response to COVID-19. We sat around and we thought what can we do in terms of contributing to getting people on bicycles. – Sindile Mavundla
The main goal of the “Heroes on Bikes” campaign is to provide essential workers with bicycles to enable them to have safe, reliable and convenient transport to reach township communities. It also aims to encourage and promote the use of bicycles as the preferred mode of transport in township communities. Organisations benefitting from this campaign include Bicycling Empowerment Network (BEN), Pedal Power Association (PPA) and Khaltsha Cycles.
“That first smile of someone getting a bicycle for the first time that’s what actually makes me do what I do.
We have seen also in this time where there’s so much hopelessness bicycles are that one tool that actually gives hope.”
So far, 1,000 bicycles have been donated but they hope to reach beyond that. If you would like to support the cause, you can do so here.
