20-year-old golf prodigy, Aldrich Potgieter, has etched his name in history as the youngest South African to win on the PGA Tour.
Detroit, United States of America (01 July 2025) – Following his successful run at the Rocket Classic at Detroit Golf Club on Sunday, Aldrich Potgieter has become the youngest South African winner on the PGA Tour!
According to GOLF.com, the South African golfer emerged triumphant from a thrilling three-man playoff to win the Rocket Classic, taking down Max Greyserman on the fifth playoff hole. Chris Kirk was eliminated in the second round. Potgieter’s winning moment came on the par-3 15th hole, when he rolled in a birdie putt from 18 feet.
He was quoted as admitting that the PGA victory was not without its fair share of challenges.
“It was definitely a tough day,” Potgieter said.
“The start didn’t go my way; I struggled to make putts, left a lot short. Finally got one to the hole, and I just saw the ball roll end over end, and I knew it was going to go in.”

But it is safe to say that his resilience shone through, culminating in a glorious comeback, as he now joins an exclusive list of international-born players who won on Tour before turning 21.
A talent destined for greatness and to conquer the green, the Pretoria-born 20-year-old, who began his golfing career at an early age, attended the Louis Oosthuizen Junior Golf Academy in Mossel Bay.
His family moved to Australia for a few years, where he continued to hone his skills before returning to South Africa at 17 and shortly after, achieved a significant milestone by winning the 2022 Amateur Championship. Potgieter turned professional in 2023 and made history in 2024 by becoming the youngest winner in Korn Ferry Tour history by winning The Bahamas Great Abaco Classic at just 19 years old.
The dedicated sportsman’s latest achievement on the PGA Tour is a testament to his flourishing career and promises an exciting future for this young golfing sensation.
