An artistic basketball court has had Durbanites buzzing after it was revealed recently! Take a look at the epic artwork and the spot where communities can now unite over a love of the game:
Durban, South Africa (20 June 2024) — A newly refurbished artistic basketball court was recently unveiled in Durban following two other courts that brought joy to parts of Johannesburg!
Local contemporary artist Sphephelelo Mguni brought the vision to life, inspired by the unique culture of Durban, its sense of community and its reputation for uniting people from all walks of life.
“To me, this piece represents pride, bravery, and Ubuntu,” said Sphephelelo. “While the leopard print represents the Zulu culture, the blue background depicts the city of Durban—a place that heralds a new age of style, innovation, and creativity. The imagery is my idea of how the game of basketball and the culture that surrounds it blend together.”
The artistic basketball court has brought a great buzz to Florida Road, known for being one of Durban’s culture hotspots.
The installation, which is part of a bigger initiative, In the Paint, has spread far and wide from its initial launch in Montreal, Canada; aiming to bring basketball and its culture to more communities across the world.
Former NBA Legend and In the Paint Global Ambassador Joakim Noah came all the way to Durban for the big reveal and shared that the initiative has helped him combine his passions (basketball, art and philanthropy), making him very proud to be a part of it all.
The Johannesburg courts are at Zoolake—as brought to life by artist Sindisa Nyoni (R!OT)—and at Ernest Oppenheimer Park thanks to Seth Pimentel (African Ginger).
Now, more community members can enjoy shooting hoops on what is essentially a larger-than-life canvas!
