With a mix of experienced competitors and rising stars, South Africa finishes on the podium, building momentum and confidence for the next big international challenges.
Tokyo, Japan (22 September 2025) – What a way to end off a gruelling week of back-to-back action! South Africa’s 4×400 meter relay team proudly secured a bronze medal at the 2025 World Athletics Championships, showcasing African pride as Botswana secured the gold. The team made of Lythe Pillay, Udeme Okon, Wayde van Niekerk and Zakithi Nene did not only climb the podium, but also secured South Africa’s first medal at the World Championships in eight years.
Olympic Gold Medalist Wayde van Niekerk highlighted the significance of the medal.
“I really think this puts the three of them in an amazing position to chase more and more medals. I’m glad it’s a bronze because now it gives them reason to fight for silver and gold for themselves individually.”
His words capture the excitement and potential of both the current team and the next generation of South African athletes.
The bronze is a boost for Team SA in this World Championship. Earlier this week, the men’s 4x100m relay team had a tricky situation. In their heat, Italy got in the way during their first baton change, so South Africa appealed. They were given another chance and ran alone on Sunday in lane six. To make the final, they needed to run 38.34 seconds, but they finished in 38.64 and just missed out.
Still, Team SA leaves with its head held high. African pride is still alive and well on the track, and this will inspire athletes and fans alike to dream bigger and aim higher.
As the World Championships wrapped up, Team SA is already looking ahead. The bronze in Tokyo is a springboard for the even greater achievements in the next season!
